Why would *you* start your own direct sales company?

Postby MyMommyBiz on Sun Apr 24, 2005 3:25 pm

I often hear from people asking advice on starting their own direct sales company. If you have thought "gee, I would love to start my own company..." what is the motivation behind the desire to start one?

Do you think there is an unfulfilled niche in a certain product area that no other company is currently filling?

Do you think a company has a good product area, but the company itself is poorly managed (ie. back orders, lack of communication with consultants, etc) and think you could do a better job at it?

Do you want to offer similar products to another company but offer consultants a better potential earnings package (ie. better commission % or downline earning split)?

What has stopped you from taking the leap and starting your own?

I just started my own direct sales company. The one thing that took me so long to do so is M O N E Y!!!! This is the same reason many people choose to go with the larger companies. When you consider that joining a larger company only has a start-up cost of anywhere form $100 and up and starting your own company will cost you anywhere form $500 and up and up, and up :lol2: just to get the paperwork done to call yourself a company. Not to forget all the forms, invites, hostess plans, games, and so on, and so on, you have to create. Creating a web site, getting wholesale reps., choosing the products you will sell, getting to know the products (are they all they are cracked up to be, believing in what you sell), buying these products, a place to store all of them, your speech, and last of all, getting that first party. Then with an adult business you have to make sure you reserch you local and state laws regarding a SOB. And because I do parties in LA and TX, I had twice as much reserch. And last of all doing that while you are take care of all your kids (I have 4 of 6 still at home), and you house. (I forgot DH, too, but he is on the road M-F as a rep for a company.

You know, I read this when you posted it, but I didn't really have an answer. Thinking about it now, I just love the direct sales industry. I haven't been absolutely successful with it, but I think I have a lot to offer. If I started a company it would be with the idea that I could help promote the industry and not just my company. I see all the sites like this one and others that have party plan directories, but I feel like there's something more out there to do than just promote online. I know there's an offline market that's just dying for help and that's where my focus is for the industry. I'm working on how to do that.

Sorry to ramble and not quite answer your question, but it's close!

why?
very good question - better compensation plan, more support & communication and a better plan to make it easier on the consultant to succeed and remove some of the extra things from her hands ...like worrying about delivery ... or the cost of the hostess program and price points-

It is an incredible amount of work though and alot goes into it. And until you get really big, it's hard to get good deals on printed materials as well- just things that pop up. Credit card processing was probably the largest upfront expense and it has easily paid for itself many times over.

Niche markets? I think each industry can have untapped markets. Depending on the party plan type, sometimes the most obvious markets are often left untapped...it just takes someone willing to get out of his/her comfort zone and explore those areas. For the adult industry- these markets are exotic dancer clubs, alternative lifestyles such as swingers, the gay and lesibian communities- these types of things- and bridal shows, places that have some type of interaction during the course of planning weddings, and sororities- huge market here but getting yourself in the door is often the hardest part...

Hi,

I started my company because I wanted to offer a good natural product. I also wanted to have a company that offered a way for others to make extra money or even be able to stay at home. I value the fact that my company has an open door policy each and every consultant is free to contact me at any time and we have weekly chats, they are involved with helping create new products. I wanted a company than everyone could help grow.
I also did not want to limit the consultants. So many companies out there put limits on the consultants to make them feel they have to sell sell sell or they will not be in the company any longer. We have NO monthly qouta's or qauterly one's for that matter. I once worked with a large direct sales company and I went inactive when I finally booked a party I could not even order catalogs for the party unless I placed a $100.00 order it was crazy so I never wanted to do that to anyone.
We have had our bumps in but things are getting better and better.
I hope to have my company for a very long time and continue to grow!
But it's alot of WORK!!! :)

Hi!
I HATE to see the posts about people losing money to work at home scams, quilts so I thought I would post where these scammers can be turned in! If you have spent money and time on a work-at-home program and now believe the program may not be legitimate, contact the company and ask for a refund. Let company representatives know that you plan to notify officials about your experience. If you can't resolve the dispute with the company, file a complaint with these organizations:comforters The Federal Trade Commission works for the consumer to prevent fraud and deceptionlog on to The Attorney General's office in your state or the state where the company is located. The office will be able to tell you whether you're protected by any state law that may regulate work-at-home programs.our local consumer protection offices.Your local Better Business Bureau.Your local postmaster.
